By Dr W. G. Grace
There can be few names more synonymous with the sport of cricket than that of William Gilbert “WG” Grace. A sometimes controversial figure, captured in anecdote and full bearded picture, few have left a greater mark on the game. An innovator and exceptional all rounder Grace led his county and country over an extended career during which he set a remarkable standard with both bat and ball.
This book faithfully recreates his multi part series published originally in the Boys Own Paper in 1880 where he expounds on the fundamentals of the game from batting, bowling and fielding techniques, to training, scoring and his view of the rules as they stood at the time. Included in this edition is a brief biography as published in the Boys Own, and a reproduction of the contemporary Rules of the Game so as to make his commentary more understandable.
The text has the style and mode of its era but the subjects covered have a currency that may surprise many. Issues of bowling legality, the spirit of the game, field placings were the stuff of cricket debate then just as they are now.
